A gentle plan

5 days in Istanbul

Mornings out, afternoons in air conditioning, evenings by the water. Skip anything that doesn't spark joy.

Day 1 — Land softly

  1. Afternoon

Arrive, taxi to the hotel (BiTaksi from the airport). Nap, shower, regroup.

  2. Early evening

Slow walk around Sultanahmet square — Hagia Sophia + Blue Mosque exteriors at golden hour.

  3. Dinner

Light meze dinner nearby. Early to bed.

Day 2 — Old City classics

  1. 9:00

Hagia Sophia at opening (~30 min).

  2. 10:00

Topkapı Palace + Harem. Walk the courtyards slowly. Sit often.

  3. 13:00

Lunch at Matbah or a shaded café in Sultanahmet.

  4. 14:30

Heat break — Basilica Cistern (cool & dim). Then back to hotel for a nap.

  5. 19:00

Sunset walk along the Hippodrome. Dinner: köfte at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi.

Day 3 — Bazaars & Bosphorus

  1. 9:30

Grand Bazaar — go in calm, leave when it gets loud.

  2. 12:00

Walk down to the Spice Bazaar. Balık ekmek lunch by Galata Bridge.

  3. 14:00

Public ferry to Üsküdar (Asian side). Tea + view.

  4. 16:00

Back to hotel — afternoon rest.

  5. 20:00

Meyhane night in Beyoğlu (mom & daughter will love this). Order meze for the table.

Day 4 — A slower day

  1. 10:00

Long kahvaltı at Van Kahvaltı Evi in Cihangir.

  2. 12:00

Wander Cihangir + Karaköy. Coffee at Mandabatmaz.

  3. 15:00

Çemberlitaş Hamamı — book a traditional scrub. Heavenly for grandma.

  4. 20:00

Quiet rooftop dinner with a Bosphorus view.

Day 5 — Asian side & farewell

  1. 10:00

Ferry to Kadıköy. Morning market wander.

  2. 13:00

Lunch at Çiya Sofrası — point at what looks good.

  3. 15:00

Moda promenade or an ice cream + tea by the water.

  4. 17:00

Ferry back at sunset — the best free show in the city.

  5. 20:00

Last dinner: somewhere familiar from earlier in the week. Toast with rakı or çay.
