The shortlist

Things to see & do

Heat-aware, mobility-aware, no FOMO. Pick three a day, max.

  • Hagia Sophia

    Old City

Go right at opening (around 9am) or after 5pm. Working mosque — modest dress + scarf for women. 15–20 min inside is plenty for elders.

  • Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet)

    Old City

Across the square. Free. Closed to tourists during the five daily prayer times — check the board out front.

  • Topkapı Palace + Harem

    Old City

Buy timed tickets online. Lots of walking and uneven stone — pace yourselves, take the courtyards as your rest stops. The Harem ticket is worth it.

  • Basilica Cistern

    Old City

Cool, dim, and atmospheric — a perfect midday heat break. Book online to skip the line.

  • Grand Bazaar

    Shopping

Go in the morning when it's calmer. Cash + cards both work. Bargain politely, smile, walk away if you need to.

  • Spice Bazaar + Eminönü

    Shopping

Combine with a balık ekmek lunch by the Galata Bridge. Buy tea, lokum, and saffron here.

  • Bosphorus ferry

    On the water

The single most relaxing thing in Istanbul. Take a public ferry from Eminönü to Üsküdar or up to Kanlıca for lunch. ~30₺, breezy, gorgeous.

  • Galata Tower + Karaköy

    Beyoğlu

Skip the tower line — admire from below. Wander Karaköy's lanes, stop for coffee and baklava.

  • İstiklal Caddesi + Taksim

    Beyoğlu

Long pedestrian street; ride the historic red tram one way. Daughter-friendly: vintage shops, music stores, side-street cafés.

  • Süleymaniye Mosque

    Old City

Less crowded than the Blue Mosque, arguably more beautiful, with a sweeping view of the Golden Horn. Highly recommended.

  • Kadıköy (Asian side)

    Asian side

Ferry over for the morning market, a long lunch at Çiya, and a wander down Moda. Feels like a different city — calmer, leafier.

  • Çemberlitaş Hamamı

    Treat yourself

A historic Ottoman bath. Wonderful for your mom — relaxing, attendants are kind. Book the traditional scrub + soap massage.
